Wish I Could Have Gone to The Church

I didn’t actually attend Seattle Aurora Church of the Nazarene. However, I was able to sit down and talk to the pastor of the church and hear his heart for the ministry and mission of the church. The pastor was very welcoming of our group and was very encouraging toward us to ask questions. He truly has a passion for ministry and for the people of his church. He is about making a difference in his community through the people of his church. The church building itself is a big one. I’m from a very small church, and find it hard to adapt to big churches because of the loss of community. However, in this big church, I sensed a different feel to the sanctuary. Instead of a normal church where there are rows with pews facing north to south (or whatever direction they might be facing) the setup of the sanctuary was round, with the pews in an auditorium-like setting. I feel like this creates a better sense of community because you can see the people whom you are not sitting next to. The church let us stay at their house for free, all 20-some of us, so this shows their hospitality and their priority to help those in need. In fact, it seemed like the pastor was glad to have us stay there. I also saw a group of cheerleaders practicing in the building. I found this a bit odd at first, but then I realized that this is part of the mission of the church; assist their community, even by letting cheerleaders practice their sweet moves! (On a side note, I know the daughter of the coach of the cheerleading squad, who so happens to have sisters on the team as well, this was a surprise to run into them)

Sadly I was unable to attend a service at this church, but I did get the opportunity to have lunch with the senior pastor one afternoon. This is a church that has apparently been very hard on its pastors over the last ten years. The pastor here has spent the last two years building relationships with the congregation and the rest of the pastoral staff. He seems to be very aware that he is in a church that has been a difficult place in the past, but he also seems to be very confident that he will be able to make it, though he did say that “only time will tell”. One thing that I enjoyed most about this church was their dedicated sanctuary. It was a beautiful sanctuary that is only a sanctuary. It does not serve as a basketball gym or other use people seem to use a multi-purpose room for. This goes a long way in portraying a churches priorities to people both inside the church and those outside the church.
