I started attending this church a few years ago at the suggestion of a classmate. At the time, I was looking to return to Christianity (I was raised Catholic and Presbyterian, but as an adult, I never really felt a connection to either of those denominations). Over time, I decided that Christianity really wasn't for me, but I have continued to attend Kensington since my mother likes the church, and we enjoy going together.

I guess you could call me an atheist who has an interest in Christianity and Christian culture, but is not interested in actually being a Christian. Weird, I know.

Kensington is what a lot of people would call a megachurch. It's huge. The main campus seats over a thousand people and they have 4 other campuses in the Metro Detroit area. Thousands of people attend each weekend.

Things I like about this church:

It's always entertaining. The churches I grew up were so boring. Kensington is very non-traditional. They aren't afraid to use humor to make their point. They also will play secular music if they think the song works with that week's message.

I also really respect the fact that as a church, they are very generous. The church does a lot to help people both in Michigan and around the world. They raised over $400,000 over Christmas for various charities. They also collected a lot of money to help the victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti.

They stay away from politics and controversial social issues, which is nice. (I'm gay, and I've never heard anything there that made me feel uncomfortable.) They also seem to be very open to questions and understanding of skeptics. They even invited Hemant Mehta  to speak a few years ago which (I found this site from the link on the Friendly Atheist blog)

I think the main downside to a church like this is that the messages are very much geared towards people who are either new Christians or who are non-Christians, which makes me wonder if people who have been Christians for a long time wouldn't like some more in-depth teaching.

Most churches have sermons on Sundays that are geared for that audience, but most churches have smaller group Bilble studies on particular topics in the Word for those who want to go deeper.

Left my old church due to boredom and frustration.

Stumbled upon Kensington and immediately loved it, as do my 3 teenagers, who HATED going to the last denomination.

It is true that Sundays are very entertaining and after a while you might want something "deeper", that is why Kensington has made this option available on Wednesday evenings at their Troy location.

A guarantee if you attend Kensington regularly: you will become the best version of "you" , your life will have more meaning, you will be more at peace, and will feel welcome and loved, especially if you connect thru small groups and serving.
