Elmbrook
Ok. So first off i should in the interset of fairness say that i do not attend a mega church myself and find the idea of a church with thousands in it hard to take anyway so i know that im pre prejudiced already before i go in.
I found it odd overall. Its like most megachurches in that its huge and carpeted.
I didnt find it friendly. There was welcomers but theres so many coming in that they dont have time to care about you. And with so many people there afterwards that people went to do their own thing straight away. That said i do know that the dyanmic of such a big place would find it hard to replicate the small church intimacy i like.
The pastor on the day (mel?) seemed like he didnt care too much to be up there and i didnt follow his sermon. Sorry mel.
Maybe this is a personal bugbear but i did not like the auditorium. At all. Firstly there are no pews just comfy seats to sit back relax and enjoy....what is this a concert!! . I dont know man i just think its hard to be humble contrite, challenged or encouraged when your made to sit in the "YOU-CHAIR" all that was missing was masseues and free cocktails. Secondly it was a souless place. Ok so protestants have to deal with some iconoclasm in their theology and im with that to a point but NOTHING trandscendant NOTHING awe inducing NOTHING beautiful really except lite-brown carpet. Lite-Brown carpet will be in the foyer of hell. This kind of deco speaks to me of a church that has succumbed to some sort of Manchieeism or dualism where only the concrete is valued and the asethtic or artistic is frowned upon... who wants to put a bet on their being a reluctance to deal with sexual sins in this place??
They had lots of programs and ive heard that they do lots of good.
In the bulletin they did have one thing which i loved and that was that they annoucned the names of people who were due to become elders but asked that anyone who might have an issue with these people becoming elders to email the following address. Thats the first time that I have seen any church try to deal with the thorny issues of elders who biblically should not be in the office.

Tobymac, thanks for the rating. I appreciate how fair you were - that even though you didn't like the church overall, you mentioned some things you did appreciate and the good you'd heard about them.
I'm intrigued that you visited Elmbrook even though you didn't expect to like it. Why did you go? Was it simply out of curiosity to see whether it matched your presuppositions about megachurches? Did a friend/family member invite you to go with them?
Helen
Relatives have taken me when i have visited them. I was excited to go as i had heard that it was one of the top fifty biggest churches in the country.
The first time i went i was open to seeing what it was like and seeing if i could attend there. ( not to actually decided if i would attend there but if i COULD attend there) .
Hope that helps.
Yes that does help, thanks.
I like your distinction between 'would' and 'could' attend there. I often test 'could' myself. It's just as well I'm not a cat or I'd be long dead!
