One word: Great! :D

Glad you're happy, but we need waaaaaaaay more than one word! :) Tell us what happened: how were you welcomed the first time you visited? What makes it great: is it the place, the people, the impact on the community...?

At CR, we love details more than just about anything. The more detailed your rating, the more people will understand the church; the more they understand, the more motivated they will be to come and see for themselves what's so great.

So... let us know, y'know?

While no one in the congregation welcomed us when we visited, the pastor and the intern both greeted us the second time we visited.

There are clear opportunities to integrate into church life and get to know people.

The sermons are very good.

The music is a bit stodgy even though they have a young worship leader. But it fits. The whole church service feels a bit like it could easily be 1980 (except for the overheads — and perhaps the progressive attitudes of the pastor and intern).

The pastor, intern, and all communion servers wear robes. The pastor wears a stole reflecting the church calendar which matches the altar cloth.

Nice, small-church feel. Probably could feel like family relatively easily. I have no idea as to whether or not they have the negative traits of most small churches.

What could they do better? I don't really know. They seem to be a good fit for a life-long Lutheran, and reflects the largely middleclass, white, suburban demographic of the area.

That's what I'm talking about, DS! Very detailed, painting a great picture of what it's like to attend a Sunday service.

Now for what I always consider the nitty gritty: Do you think they ask their attendees to fulfill the mission of Jesus--y'know, serve, "do unto the least of my brothers," "sell all you have an follow me," and so on.

Or do they avoid the more challenging demands their religion's founder...?

The words from the pulpit are there. Members are encouraged to actively engage with their community, with their neighbors.

The pastors recently led a book discussion group on "Take This Bread: A Radical Conversion" by Sara Miles. She was an atheist lesbian who converted at age 46 when she went into an Episcopal Church in San Francisco on a whim. Fascinating conversion story. She soon founded a community food pantry and became a zealous advocate that cause.

Apparently this study naturally led to conversation on the role of the individual in the community. How personal does this involvement become, how sacrificial? How much of it is enabling? Do we give without condition? Do we give through safe intermediaries so as to avoid entanglement? Honest, direct disucssion without sinking into THOU SHOULDs.

Uh uh Mat. I'm right. I LOVE EVERYONE

I don't doubt you're right... I was only hoping for more info as to why someone would want to go. What are the particulars about why your church is awesome...? Is it how it makes you feel when you're there, or after you leave? Is it the people you meet? Is it the way it inspires you to follow the path, and do the work, of Jesus?
