The pastor was funny and the church was friendly

The building was a bit too small and cramped for the number of people that were attending. The pastor was an engaging speaker and was very funny. I was also impressed by the friendliness of the people in the church.

Thanks Todd for commenting

What does "engaging" look or sound like? Did he tell a lot of jokes? use personal illustrations? quote lots of scripture? - Paint a picture for our readers

Also - since many churches arent friendly what did this church do differently that captured your attention?

Sorry for my lack of detail. I am new to this site (saw you on TV). They are doing a series called The Ultimate Fighter which is about the life of David. It was obvious for the pastor's comments they had been in the series for awhile. He took a story I had heard a dozen times and made it interesting again. His use of humor, modern application, but understanding of Israelite history and Hebrew is what made it engaging. I tend to get bored when I hear sermons but actually could have listened longer.

Friendly seems to be the overall atmosphere of the church. I have visited churches where the only people that said hi to me or involved me in a conversation were the assigned greeters. I figured over a dozen people introduced themselves to me (including the pastor). Surprised me because there were so many people crammed into that building.

The church is larger than what I am looking for but enjoyed his speaking so much that I will probably follow his podcasts.

Great detail - this is the kind of info people appreciate when they are looking for a church.

One more thing- Isnt this the guy who is the "Fight Pastor?" I think he either engages in fighting himself or promotes it- What do you think of that and how would one explain that to people who read the gospel where Jesus says to turn the other cheek?

I grew up a Lutheran, converted to Catholicism in my early teens, but drifted away from the church in my late teens and twenties.  I liked the people in the church, but never felt like the messages were "for me."

A friend invited me to Canyon Creek Church, and after the first service, I knew I was where I was supposed to be.  It would be too easy to dismiss Canyon Creek as "young and hip."  Truthfully, the church just has an energy that you can't chalk up to just being young.  People at the church are just full of life.

The pastors are great.  Brandon is funny and relatable, Di tells passionate stories punctuated with a deep understanding of language and scripture, and Christian ... man, that guy knows more about the Bible than I ever will.  Christian is my favorite ... his sermons are always funny, but he's not afraid of tackling tough subjects head on.

Canyon Creek is an "Assemblies of God" chuch, and I've had some people express concern about that.  I don't know what goes on at other Assemblies churches (Canyon Creek is my first), but Canyon Creek is just a bunch of vibrant people who love each other and love Jesus.  And that's all I needed.

Jim - Yeah, Brandon is the "Fight Pastor."  He doesn't fight, or promote fights ... he's just an MMA fan and uses that as a way to bring Christ's message to that community.  He's been pretty clear about not endorsing fighting outside of the sport of mixed martial arts.

The fight pastor! Thanks for coming by, SuperRob... I have been hoping to speak to people about this. As someone outside the church--but who has visited more than a few--I struggle with the notion.

I know "it's just a sport," but is there anything Jesus ever said that could possibly support the unbridled violence of the MMA...? It seems so (and pardon my consumer comment here, but I think it's apt) "off brand" for followers of Jesus...

I mean, WWJD? And how does reaching people through a passion for violence support Jesus' teachings? I am hoping someone can help me see the light on this...

Matt,

A buddy mentioned that you had asked about Fight Pastor on this site. I, of course, have no desire to rate my own church but would like to explain.....

Fight Pastor is our ministry to the Mixed Martial Arts community. That ministry is to those already involved in that culture. It is a culture that is very absent of spiritual influence.

If you have any other questions about it you can email me at fightpastor@fightpastor.com.

Thanks for coming by...I guess my only question is do you endorse what they do...? Or is your goal to save these guys from their lives of violence...? For example, Jesus did reach out to prostitutes, but did he say, "Keep on being a prostitute!"

And who's more likely to convert to Christianity after a fight: the guy who won or the guy who lost...? (Nudge and a wink on that last line there...)
