The Friendly Church for Seniors
4

We received the "standard" handshake and a smile about 3 times between the front door and our seats. Each member of the congregation that we met was overly warm and friendly. I even got a side hug from a senior citizen. I think the average age of the congregation was 50.

My wife and I (late 20's early 30's) found the music to be outdated and medium in tempo although it was heartfelt and genuine. "Come Now is the Time to Worship" was the opener - but it was very slow and not a typical opening song.

The church was fairly liturgical. The service opened with a responsive scripture reading and a prayer from by Senior Pastor.

Congregational singing included 5 or 6 songs and was over in less than 30 minutes. The offering was taken before the last song. Then the pastor got up and shared some prayer requests and rambled for about 10 minutes... finally getting to the prayer requests.

After the Prayer Requests - the Pastor preached on Revelation 1:9-2:3 or thereabouts. He preached for about 75 minutes. Much longer than any church that I've attended recently. I think that he could have condensed the message down into about 25-35 minutes if he didn't travel down so many rabbit trails. :-)

Overall - the service was enjoyable if not a bit long.

If you are looking for a church for older people, that is friendly... this might be it. For my wife and I - we'll keep looking.

Very well written review. How do you suppose the pastor would respond to your request to shorten the sermon?

Please send in reviews for the churches you attend and tell us what kind of church you would like to see or experience.

Thanks

Jim and Matt

I have to say that one of the things that keeps my husband and I from coming back to many of the churches we have visited is the length of the sermon. I personally wish pastors knew this.

Most of those sermons could say the exact same thing in a fraction of the time. Personally, we tune out after the first twenty minutes anyway.

I grew up in Vegas and nearly every year I go back to visit my parents. I got saved in Vegas at a Calvary Chapel when I was 18 y old. On some of my trips back home I've gone to a CC service when I could. I've been to the CC Lone Mtn one before. It's close to my childhood neighborhood. It seemed like a very typical CC service to me, where the sermon is always the centerpiece of the gathering. The people were very friendly. There was a woman sitting next to me who God was obviously doing business with. She cried through the entire sermon, which was about 45minutes, which I remember as being more standard from back in the day of my CC younger years. As soon as the service was over a mature woman came right to her and spent one on one time with her, comforting her, getting her name and number, etc...it was a great moment for me to see someone being connected to so generously and sincerely.

But yeah, I hear ya, the CC model definitely tends to have 45min or longer sermons.
