Calvary Chapel
A church with potential
2

I visited this church on two separate occasions, while seeking a new place of worship.  Since the church is affiliated with Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa, it seemed to be a place that might be in line with my own beliefs.

The church seems relatively small, although there are two morning services.  In my two visits, I attended both the first and the second services.  I did not find an appreciable difference between the two services.  There appeared to be the same worship, the same message, and the people seemed to be very similar to each other in both services.

The people were not overly friendly.  For the most part, I felt as if I could have come, worshipped, and have left having only been greeted by the "official" greeters at the door.  The people were not hostile; they just seemed to be focused on each other and rather indifferent to those whom they did not know.

The music at the church was nicely done.  For the most part, it seemed to be low-key, but was performed by individuals who seemed to be both talented musicians and singers, and who seemed to enjoy leading others in worship.

The pastor's message was an expository one.  In that regard, the church felt more like a Bible church.  For those who would expect some degree of fire-and-brimstone from this Texas preacher, such was not the case.  His delivery was low-key and straightforward.

Seems like your take on this church was "meh." Must be strange to be part of a place that feels it's doing the work of an omnipotent supernatural force and have it garner this kind of reaction...

Tragically, I have the "meh" feeling more often than I would care to recall, Matt.

An indictment Jesus might be comfortable offering if he were writing the Book of the Revelation today

For the record, Jesus did not write Revelation. John did. Like many books of predictions is is writen cripticly so anyone can "read in" almost anything.

delbard I didnt say Jesus wrote the Book of Revelation - I said "if he were writing"

This is not a place to discuss theology, delbard and Jim. Church experiences only on ChurchRater... whether it was John, or King James' scribe, or Danielle Steele who wrote the book of Revelation is irrelevant on ChurchRater.

I misunderstood the mesage ....  sorry

no apologies necessary...! we're glad to have you here and contributing, and, IMO, it's simply what people are accustomed to in any discussion about church: the validity of the Bible, of the facts surrounding it, heck, of the very faith itself.

But what we're trying to do is avoid those discussions because, well, they're not discussions--they're debates.

There is, of course, room in this world for debates... matter of fact, most every message board/forum/blog/comment list/etc. on the web is one... so we're trying to make this a "debate-free zone."

And what better subject matter for avoiding debates than churches and religion...? ;)
