Offering Collected in Halloween Buckets: Spiderman, Batman
4

Groovy. And not in the ironic, "retro" meaning of the word. But the dictionary definition:
groov-y  [groo-vee]   –adjective, groov -i -er, groov -i -est.
1. Slang. highly stimulating or attractive; excellent: groovy music; a groovy car.
Highly stimulating. From when you first show up and see a group of colorful, animated, smiling people outside to when you're invited to a BBQ picnic at the end to most everything in between:

  • the music (which I enjoyed here more than anywhere: thanks to Todd and Angie Fadel and their fantastic band, Agents of Future).
  • the sermon, which involved an open discussion--class was in session, really--on a few verses from the Bible.
  • the congregation: mostly young people, but more than a few people over 30, 40, and 50, too. But they were all "into it." Not a wandering attention span in the whole place.
  • the action: you could see that this was a church that was working hard to make the community an better place: food for the poor, help for the homeless, hope for all.
  • the offering, which was collected in plastic Halloween buckets (spiderman and batman heads).

I'll admit: I am biased. I typically like stuff kind of outside the mainstream. Probably only because that's where I happen to find things that are more "real" to me.
For example, I'd rather go see a band in a bar than U2 at a stadium. Nothing against U2 of course--they were once a band in a bar, too.
But as alternative as it looked, the process at The Bridge was as traditional as you'd find at any mainstream church--call to worship, the reading, the collection, the sermon.
It was how we went through that process--the energy, the honesty, the community--that made it exceptional.
I fully understand that this kind of church may not fit everyone--e.g., the volume may be a bit too loud--but for someone looking for a "working church" (one that gets things done) that makes church engaging without using PowerPoints or fog machines, The Bridge will fit you well.

My family and I have been a part of The Bridge for over a year. It is by far the most honest church we have ever belonged to. I tell people that it seems more like a tavern than a church.

I was pleased that Jim and Casper affirmed our groovy vibe of Come as You Really Are. Our bare bones Sunday morning service was also noted by them in their book for being nonmanipulative, a big departure from the pleas they had been hearing for money in some of the megachurches.

Overall, I think their chapter on our church was accurate and fair. I hope they'll come hang out with us again soon.

i'm so thankful someone can see the beauty shining amidst the chaos at the bridge. i was someone who swore off church due to spiritual manipulation i had seen over and over again in some "emerging churches" and quite frankly, i was tired of the bullshit. it's nuts, because here i am, at the bridge, and have been going for just over 3 years and i fall in love with our community each week. not to say bullshit doesn't happen -- we're human -- but what's different is the bullshit isn't hiding in the shadows of shame or guilt or perfectly manicured hair...it's in the open, where Light can enter in and wash away the darkness. plus, the music kicks ass, the art is out of control, CO PASTORS, not LEAD pastors...no long arm of the God busting down on people's heads and the people...come on! the people!?! so good -- a colorful mishmash of young and old, poor and less poor, and a free bag of groceries for whomever needs it -- attending the church or not. ok, ok, i'll step off..... :) glad you liked our community, matt.

just as a side note, we are now meeting in an actual church building -- we are renting. we were kicked out of the last place we were in...for being too loud and bringing in the "riff raff". whoops! our new address is 636 n. stanton, portland. and since you visited, matt, ken loyd has gone on to plant a church, HOMEPDX. deborah loyd, geoff neill and angie fadel are all co-pastors at the bridge.
