Does your church have beachfront property?  I see a beautiful picture of a beach on the church's Web site.

Would it be fair to say that doctrine is not a strong emphasis of Aptos UM Church?  I've read Scott Jones' United Methodist Doctrine: The Extreme Center, but didn't see anything resembling the theology that Jones describes on the church's Web site.  Maybe the focus of the church is on social questions?  Or maybe the Web site is a work in progress?

Hello there - Yes, our website is a work in progress!  And, no, so sorry -- we are not actually located on beachfront property, but about 6 blocks from the beach.  The view is meant to correspond to the greeting - "with a welcome as wide as the sea!"   It probably would be fair to say that doctrine is not a strong emphasis at our church as much as "Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors."  We are currently studying what might be called "emerging" theology (perhaps you know the work of Marcus Borg), but our congregations includes persons with more "evangelical" beliefs.  We have no flags in our sanctuary, but honored our fallen on Memorial Day.  We are a "Reconciling Congregation" meaning we actively welcome GLBT folk.  We are involved in several ministries within the larger UM church and our community and are exploring deeper involvement in missions.  We are also exploring what it means to "Re-Think Church."  Perhaps you'll join us?  10:30 on Sundays!    Pam

Thank you for your welcome!  Six blocks from the beach...how nice!  Would "Re-Think Church" include house churches?  I'm on the east coast, so I can't drop by, but appreciate your welcome.  Just curious.  United Methodists vary greatly in belief these days.  Ben Witherington discusses the views of Borg (among other scholars) in his book surveying recent developments on the study of the historical Jesus titled The Jesus Quest: The Third Search for the Jew of Nazareth.

As long as we don't go too far out on limbs.  --- I DO believe it when It says, "Our Father which art in Heaven" -- for a reason; -- and not, "Our Whatever which is Someplace".
