Jim and Casper Like A Preacher in A Strip Club

Dr. Randy McKinley wrote:

Your book Jim & Casper is like asking a preacher to go into a strip club and give an evaluation!

He might say “in my opinion, they took off too many clothes”.

The whole thing is not designed for preachers any more than a church service is intended to please atheist.

No part of my church service is intended to please or pacify dead, blind, children of Satan (empahsis added).

They do not have the capacity to worship or approach God in any way.

So they should feel uncomfortable in church, just like I would feel uncomfortable in a strip club.

The book does compel me to have more open, non-judgmental contact with honest pagans!

“I think it’s wonderful to be able to review church’s because others can see what might be both good and bad about a church. And I’m open minded enough to understand that one person’s bad experience might compare to another’s good experience. It all has to do with individual people.”

Raves

“This is not the typical book that independent Baptists would carry around their conventions, but as a Baptist pastor I believe that it should be read even if in the privacy and darkness of our own hideaways. By the way, I just saw your book in a book store and the Title, Red dust-jacket and the name Casper (Casper was my favorite cartoon) caught my attention. I am glad that I picked it up and plan to pass it around to friends.”

“I am currently reading Jim and Casper Go To Church and will recommend this book to everyone!”

“hi guys, just started and finished the book on a 4 hour flight home from willow’s annual arts conference. i don’t think i’ve ever highlighted a book so much. every single page has something yellow-fied. i’ve ordered a copy for everyone on my creative planning / programming team. i told my pastor what i’ll tell you: i don’t think i’ve read a more relevant book for church staff, leaders, worship leaders, programmers, and whoever else puts forth a ton of energy, heart and soul in “church work” every week.

“I want to say how refreshing it is to hear open and honest talk about church. I agree, much of what the church community says does not match with what Jesus taught. Thank you!”

Gentlemen: I really enjoyed your book. And Casper - you’re okay!

“Wow, Such a trite expression, but that was the first word which came to mind after reading your book! What a fresh and honest approach to looking at the American Church. Bishop Wayne Neller, New Wine Ministries International, is asking his American pastors to read this book before our annual pastors conference this winter. This book should be a “must read” for pastors and church leaders, or perhaps even required reading for all American Christians.”

“Gentlemen, thanks for the book!I have a shortcoming in starting and finishing books, but this one was different.. I really finished it! ( my wife was impressed). This book was also different because I could see myself in Casper’s shoes, asking the same questions “why?”, and also in Jims shoes”

Rants

‘You know the evangelical church has hit a low point when it seeks the advice of an atheist for recommendations on how to make church better”

“I just finished reading Jim & Casper Go to Church by Jim Henderson & Matt Casper, and I was less than impressed… Jim seems to think that catering to the whims of a fickle world’s need for entertainment will somehow win “the missing” (A.K.A. “the lost”). Again, I am surprised that a Pentecostal preacher would discount the work of the Holy Spirit. Salvation is the work of the Holy Spirit”

Sorry - There just wern’t that many rants :-)

No Mean People Allowed

Ever see this bumper sticker? No Mean People Allowed!

One of the things that never ceases to amaze me (and my atheist friends -yes they are watching) is how mean Christians can be to each other (and to non believers).

There are some of the comments on this site that are pretty vitriolic.

There aren’t a lot of these kinds of comments but even the few that get past our scanner are just plain mean.

Church Rater will delete these comments as soon as we see them or they’re brought to our attention

If you want your comments or reviews to be read you will have to take the vitriol out before pushing the Post button

Stick with the categories of Singing, Preaching, Friendliness etc

Topics such as financial irresponsibility, adultery, etc. are issues you will have to take up with people who actually can look you in the eye - those issues are beyond the scope of a blog.

Hey, Jim and Casper–
Just started reading your book yesterday and am already halfway through…it’s really a Christmas gift for my husband, but I peeked and got hooked in! Thank you, thank you for your honest words.
